Victoria United emerged victorious in the Elite One Championship playoffs, marking their inaugural trophy win. The team’s strategic draw against Stade Renard on the final day secured their leap from third place at the season’s end to playoff champions with 13 points.
Renowned for their formidable offense, Victoria United netted 11 goals throughout the playoffs, with a notable four coming from penalties.
Richmond Nji, the current leading scorer, contributed five goals to the tally, while Wilfred Douala Nathan added three, including the pivotal goal in the last match.
Cotonsport, who had a strong regular season finish in second place, carried their form into the playoffs but ultimately fell short, ending as runners-up with 10 points after a loss to Victoria United and a subsequent draw against Dynamo.
Stade Renard, also finishing with seven goals for and five against, narrowly missed the championship title due to a last-minute penalty by Wilfred Douala Nathan.They recorded a single defeat against Gazelle and four draws, mirroring Cotonsport’s performance.
Colombe Sportive, arriving early in Douala with championship aspirations, concluded the playoffs in fourth place, boasting the tightest defense with only four goals conceded.
Canon, along with Stade Renard and Gazelle, scored the fewest goals in the playoffs, each tallying four. However, Canon managed to secure a top-five finish with eight points on the final day.
Yong Sports Academy’s season was marred by controversy, resulting in point deductions for misconduct, overshadowing the determination and fighting spirit they displayed, particularly by their number 10, Nchindo John Bosco, who scored six times.
Gazelle’s victory over Stade Renard and Colombe stands out as a highlight in what could have been a remarkable season for the Garoua team. Returning to the playoffs for a second consecutive year, Aliou Kadar’s squad narrowly avoided last place, finishing seventh.
Dynamo’s season was marked by disappointment, failing to translate their regular-season dominance into playoff success, leaving them seeking consolation in the Cup of Cameroon.
The eight clubs involved in the playoffs have secured their spots in Cameroon’s top-tier league, which will expand to a single pool of 16 teams next season. The relegation playoffs continue in Yaounde, with three more match days remaining.
