Juan Micha Obiang, head coach of the Equatorial Guinea national football team says despite his teams elimination in the round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire, he believes his team lost with honour.
Bayo scored a stoppage time winner for Guinea against Equatorial Guinea as the Nzalang National were eliminated from the competition.
“My team played well during the first stage. We knew that this is the knockout stage. The team lost with honour. We were ready to win the match but if we didn’t win, it is football”, Juan Micha Obiang told the press.
Equatorial Guinea had a player sent off in the first half before current AFCON top scorer, Emilio Nsue failed to convert a penalty that would have given Equatorial Guinea the lead.
“I believe that our team played at a very high level and played till the last minute. The red card was critical”, Coach Juan Micha added.
Equatorial Guinea had control of majority segment of the match.
Juan Micha Obiang used the press conference to congratulate the Equatorial Guinea players for defying pre tournament predictions to top Group A ahead of Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire.
“We knew how to strike the opponent, we also didn’t allow them play their kind of match. I think my players did their best and I congratulate them”, he said.
