Indomitable Lionesses duo Ngock Yango Jeanette Grace and Esther Mayi-Kith have expressed optimism while acknowledging Kenya’s strength ahead of Tuesday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) 2024 second-leg qualifier.
Cameroon holds a slim advantage over Kenya, following the Lionesses 1-0 win, courtesy a goal from Eliane Manbolambo last Friday in Douala, but coach Jean Baptiste Bisseck knows the tie is just half gone and it’s all opened going into Tuesday’s cliffhanger at the Nyayo national stadium.
The team arrived in Nairobi on Sunday afternoon and had a first training session this Monday, during which Mayi and Yango threw lights on their preparations for the game.
“The doing fine and we know it’s going to difficult game since they’re just a goal down. I believe they have ambitions to qualify. We’ll do our best.”
Yango who lasted the best part of the first-leg win at the Reunification stadium then went on to reveal what Cameroon will be out for in the reversed fixture:
“The objective remains to win the game,” added the French-based experience midfielder.
The hosts knows they have to find the back of the Cameroon net on Tuesday to nurse any hopes of progressing to the next round of the journey to Morocco.
Though Cameroon’s lead is slim, Kenya won’t find their way back into the contest with ease as the Cameroon defense is quite confident after their first-leg performance.
Reading’s Mayi helped Cameroon to a clean sheet in the first-leg and acknowledges it wasn’t easy before revealing the area they could target to undo Kenya.
“We are not worried. We always try to play the best football and we know that we are coming to play against a good team.
“They play on the ground and sharp with counter attacks, so we need to be strong in the middle and prevent them from advancing,” Mayi explained.
Mayi expects it tough against the Kenyans and their home fans, but is assured they have enough to deal with that.
“We know it will be a tough game because Kenya will be playing at home and will have that advantage. We need to come here and compete. We have worked to fix some things that we saw from the first leg and we are ready,” Mayi added.
Kenya, on a run of five consecutive defeats against Cameroon, needs to win by two goals to advance to the second round.
Visiting Cameroon needs to just avoid any defeat by two goals to stay alive in the journey to Morocco 2024.
The indomitable Lionesses traveled to Nairobi on Sunday morning while their host Harambee Starlets also got to town on the same day.
The fact that the game will be the last at Nyayo national stadium, before a one-year closure for renovation makes it more attractive for locals expected to fill the 45000 capacity stadium.
The aggregate winner of the tie will face Botswana or Gabon. The former lead 4-1 ahead of the second-leg tie which will be played at home.
Morocco, who were hosts and runners-up of the previous AWCON will host the next tournament on a date to be announced by CAF.
