Cameroon’s Volleyball Lions end the 24th edition of the African Men’s volleyball championship in fourth place, after a shocking 3-1 loss to returnees Libya.
Played on Wednesday, September 13 at the Cairo stadium, the team gave away its first set lead, to a more solid Libyan side.
Dolegombai Sem and teammates, who crossed paths with Libya for the second time in this competition, looked like the better side as they pulled a 22-25 win in the first set.
Ahmed Ikhbayri and brother Mohammed Ikhbayri’s combined 46 points will enable the Libyans to crawl back, lining up a three set win in the last phases of the game,25-22,25-23,25-15.
Injured Yaoussia Kavoogo and Nathan Wounembaina placed Cameroon at the disadvantage, one coach Malloum Abbas did not fail to mention in post match interviews.
“The injuries affected us, We tried to keep pushing, but it was always going to be difficult without them on the court. We now need to go back to the drawing board and plan on how to come back stronger, since some players will be retiring after this competition,” Malloum Abbas reacted.
As for Libya’s Coach Ghazi Koubaa, it was all praise for his team’s resilience, highlighting the need for improvements going into 2025.
“Today we had to confirm our win against Cameroon in the group was not a fluke, and I think the boys responded well after going down by a set.Our objective was to qualify for the world championship, now the work has just started,”Ghazi Koubaa stated.
This win sees Libya return to the podium for the first time since 1979. Cameroon on her path not only leaves this biennial competition empty-handed for the first time since 2015, but also misses out on an opportunity to play in the 2025 volleyball men’s world Championship.
As for the finals, Host Egypt lifted a ninth African Men’s volleyball championship trophy at home after asserting their dominance over North African mates Algeria, defeating them by 2:1.
