Cameroon vs Burundi: Retired Onana returns, regulars absent in Song’s 24-man squad

Last season’s UEFA Champions League best keeper and now Manchester United’s goal guard, Andre Onana who had retired from International football, has returned.

He has been named in the 24-man squad of Cameroon Internationals chosen to go fetch the country an African Cup of Nations(AFCON) qualification ticket against Burundi at home next month.

The revelation was made this Tuesday, during a press conference by head coach, Rigobert Song Bahanag, a list which no doubt is headed by Vincent Aboubakar-team captain of the Indomitable Lions.

Onana’s retirement from the National team after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, spark reactions that even saw government intervention to get the first choice keeper back to the Lions Den and it is obvious the government pressure has forced him out of retirement, though has not officially made a U-Turn from that decision. Amongst the three keepers called; Devis Epassy and Fabrice Ondoa, Onana is the only competitive keeper at the moment.

Rigobert Song during the press conference mentioned that, there was never any big problem with Andre Onana. He has done the needful to earn his place back in the National team.

Sivasspor forward Njie Clinton and defense man Harold Moukoudi from Athens who have been away from the national since they missed penalties during the 2021 AFCON semi final game against Egypt on home soil, have walked their way back to the National team after a fine run of brilliant performances put up at club lately, especially Clinton whose return was the most predictable.

However, some big absentees have been noted in the 24-man squad; the likes of prolific right back Fai Ngoran Collins who since the end of last season has been without club, midfielder sensations, Martin Hongla and Pierre Kunde Malong, Jerome Ngom Bekeli who made headlines during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by assisting Aboubakar score the lone winning goal against Brazil Kevin Nkoudou amongst others. The only exception being Jean Charles Castelleto who is to serve a one man ban after picking up two consecutive yellow cards against Namibia.

Cameroon faces Burundi on September 12 at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua in a crucial encounter that would decide who picks up the other available ticket from group C to the final tournament in Code D’Ivoire next year.
