At least two people are reported dead with many injured, over a stampede that occured at the W4 entrance to General Mathieu Kérékou friendship stadium on Saturday, in an AFCON qualifying game opposing Benin to defending champions Senegal.
The Benin football federation has sent out a note of condolences to the bereaved families, wishing those injured quick recovery.
“The President of the Benin Football Federation and his Executive Committee learned with great sadness of the death of supporters during the match BENIN vs SENEGAL. While waiting for the responsibilities to be located, I would like to present, on behalf of the Executive Committee, football players and in my own name, the most saddened condolences to the bereaved families,” the note read.
The federation did not state the number of deaths, but reports gotten from online media, sports news Africa, suggest at least two have lost their lives.
Prior to this game, the government had announced free entrance into the venue with the prerequisite being the match ticket which could be procured at nine distribution points in the country.
Unfortunately, about 10 minutes until kickoff, an uncontrolled crowd will be forcing its way into the stadium with many gasping for breath in the process.
Many citizens have blamed this unfortunate incident on poor organization. The security failed to call the crowd to order, just a handful of firefighters to attend to the flux of people amongst many things.
Inside the stadium , a determined cheetah squad forced defending champions to a one-all tie after Abdoul Rachid Moumini unleashed a powerful strike to cancel Abdoulaye Seck’s first half lead.
