2022 World Cup: First chance, Ngom leaves unforgettable mark

Cameroon’s World Cup ambition has been cut short in the group stage of the 2022 edition but the Indomitable Lions leave with their shoulders high.

Thanks to Vincent Aboubakar and the man who caused Aboubakar make history at the 80,000 capacity Lusail Stadium in Doha against Brazil, Five time World Champions.

Coming in at the 85 minute in place of Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, Ngom Jerome Bekili with his second touch on the ball gave a smart and we’ll calculated assist to team captain Vincent Aboubakar who netted the header that led to Cameroon’s 1-0 victory over Brazil.

The 24-year-old local inclusion from Colombe sportive of Dja and Lobo in the 26-man squad who defended the colours of the nation in Qatar, becomes the first local player to deliver an assist in this edition of the World Cup, plus coming off from the bench to make history.

Cameroon as denied a chance to reach the round of 16 but the Ngom Jerome assist ensured a glorious exit for the Lions who did what no African country has ever done and that is by beating Brazil.

Fair to say Ngom gave a memorable input in less than 15 minutes played after being given his first chance in the World Cup.

“I feel it is a great joy to be able to realize a dream, to play a World Cup against a great Brazil, with players that I see playing every weekend in the Premier League and in the best championships in the world. I find myself playing against them, that’s what makes me proud, and in addition I make a decisive pass” said Jérôme Ngom according to L’Equipe.

“Even though we are eliminated, it was not an easy match. I’m proud. I wish we got a little more time to prove our worth better to the world » he added.

Ngom Jerome is one of the two local players selected by coach Rigobert Song Bahanag for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after he put an impressive performance against Jamaica in their last but one pre-world cup friendly at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde on November 9.

The impact he made in Cameroon’s victory has sure been registered in history books and he will be remembered for what his assist he has done to the entire football loving people of Cameroon.

Up next, is the 2023 African Nations Championship in Algeria next year in which he was a part of Coach Alioum Saidou’s Intermediate Lions squad before finding favour in the eyes of head coach of the Cameroon senior national team.
