Cameroon international, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa scored a belter but his goal counted for nothing as Real Madrid CF came from behind to beat Napoli SC by 4-2 on Wednesday to advance to the last 16 of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League.

The match day five fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu was one of the stand outs from the day the draw was made and didn’t fail to live up to its billing.

Walter Mazzzari’s men traveled to Spain with an extra motivation to tame the record champions and enhance their chances of progressing from the group with one game to go.

The Italian champions enjoyed a dream start when Giovanni Simeone started in place of recovering Victor James Osihmen put them ahead after nine minutes.

Gio toe-poke a lose ball into the penalty area to give the visitors a shock lead at the Bernabeu.

Brazilian forward Rodrygo restored parity with a wonderful strike from outside the box that left the Napoli keeper rooted to the spot.

At 1-1 after 11 minutes, there was excitement and expectations in the packed facility as home as well as traveling fans knew they were in for a special night.

Usual suspect, Jude Bellingham put Real Madrid ahead with his 15th goal of the season when he directed a fine ball from David Alaba into the roof of the Napoli net to make it 2-1 after 22 minutes.

The three goals in 22 minutes didn’t push any of the teams backwards as on a rare night, two Italian managers went all -offensive as Real Madrid’s Carlos Ancelloti pushed his team to match Walter Mazzzari’s men pound for pound.

Real took the lead to the pause but the game remained wide open, with promise of an electrifying second segment.

Former Villarreal midfielder Anguissa restored parity barely two minutes upon resumption when he put his laces through a second ball that left Lunic rooted to the spot. The midfielder picked a well-worked through ball into the area and attempted a cross which was blocked with the ball returning him at a prime position to short and he made the most of it pulling an unstoppable drive to make it 2-2. The goal was his first in the competition this season.

Napoli grew in confidence and stayed in the game and were nearly rewarded through Osimhen. The Nigerian thought he had put the visitors back in front when he picked a through ball and put it at the back of the Real net. Unfortunately, for the substitute he was marginally offside.

Another substitute Nicolas Paz sent the Bernabeu into total celebration when he somehow beat Alex Meret for the third time in the afternoon from way out of his penalty area.

Real Madrid pushed and obtained a fourth in added time, through Joselu to ensured that Real put the game to bed and pick up their fifth victory in five group stage matches.

Real Madrid CF are guaranteed to finish as group C winners, having garnered 15 points from five games so far.

Anguissa’s Napoli remain on course to reach the round of 16 as they are three points better than Braga going into their last group meeting at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on December 12.
