Wassou Goue scored twice to inspire Cotonsport to pick a 2-0 win against the 2016 cup of Cameroon champions in a tight quarter-final fixture played on Saturday at the Bertoua Municipal Stadium.

The defending champions had to dig deep to achieve the come back win after the resilient APEJES side guided by coach Ndongo Emma took the lead and played well across 90 minutes.

Lethal finisher and top scorer this season, Joseph Apam put the men from Mfou ahead after just seven minutes. The goal from a great build up play silenced the over one thousand Cotonsport fans that came hoping their side will have another big win as they did against 2013 winners YOSA in the previous round.

As usual, Cotonsport dug deep and fought their way back into the game, being behind for just 12 minutes before equalizing from the penalty spot through Wassou.

The little magician stepped up and converted from the spot after the Referee whistled for a penalty following a foul on Ibrahim Abba.

Coach Bisseck Jean Baptiste’s Coton were clearly not playing to their best capacity but stayed in the game till the break.

The second segment was however more improved and they scored the second goal through Wassou to go ahead for the first time in the tie.

The on-form 18-year-old forward scored his third goal in four games in the 61st minute, making it 2-1 in favor of Cotonsport.

Though there were chances at both ends in the final half hour plus added time, the holders held on to advance to the eighth finals alongside the likes of Canon Yaounde, Stade Renard of Melong, PWD of Bamenda who are previous winners.

The draw for the eight and quarter-final will be made on Monday, June 6 at the FECAFOOT headquarters in Tsinga Yaounde.

It is expected that the next round of matches begins by Wednesday.
