Ekerette Anthony Udom produced a solid performance on his debut for Rivers United in their 3-2 win over Doma United on Sunday as the second stanza of the NPFL 2023/2024 season took center stage.
There were times during that hard fought 3-2 victory over Doma United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium when that did not feel the key takeaway from the afternoon.
Nyima Nwagua’s hat-trick was surely the highlight, underlining the importance of taking a winning mentality to Angola as the CAF Confederation’s Cup Group matches resume with a date with Académica do Lobto on Sunday.
Sadiq Abubakar and Alex Oyowah combined well to set up Nyima Nwagua for the games opener just after seven minutes but it was Deputy Echeta who produced the party tricks – a solo run, a nutmeg and an intelligent cross in the same move in the 47th minute-summed up by Nwagua’s header that set mood of optimism for the win.
Paul Odeh was the assist provider for Nyima Nwagua’s third goal, showcasing his undoubted quality following his move from Wikki Tourist in 2022. But the debut of Ekerette Anthony Udom also really caught the eye.
So impressive was Ekerette, the club’s signing from Sunshine Stars, that the Pride of Rivers supporters will be hoping he could be the catalyst for their team taking a huge step forward this season.
Despite having plenty of central defenders already on the club’s books, one can easily say the vigour put in at pursuing this acquisition in the January transfer window is already fielding dividends.
Playing on the left side as one of the two center halves, Udom’s physical presence snuffed out the threat posed by Hilary Owoku as he swept across to cover openings left and right.
But there was more to this display than the physical as he produced a more assured passing performance throughout the game.
A day to remember for Ekerette Anthony Udom as same can be side for midfield maestro Mathias Samuel who also made his debut appearance for the Pride of Rivers as a second half substitute replacing Alex Oyowah.
