Cameroon international Karl Toko Ekambi, has joined French ligue 1 side Stade rennais FC from Olympic Lyonnais, on a five months loan deal.

The 30_year_old forward was officially unvealed on Thursday afternoon by his new club, after going through a tough period at his parent club Olympique Lyonnais.

“Stade Rennais F.C. and Olympique Lyonnais have reached an agreement for the loan of the 30-year-old Cameroonian international for a period of five months without an option to buy,” Stade Rennais wrote on Thursday afternoon.

Toko Ekambi joined Olympic Lyonnais in 2020, and has scored over 30 goals in 80 appearances. The last months have been topsy turvy for the forward, who went down the pecking orders in Laurent Blanc’s team, and also ran out of favor from Lyon fans.

“Thank you Stade Rennais F.C. for trusting me. I made this choice because I know the club, in particular thanks to Florian Maurice with whom I had the chance to work at Olympique Lyonnais,” Toko Ekambi said.

“I also know a lot of players, Hamari Troaré is like my brother, we met at Paris F.C., Martin Terrier, I played with him at OL, Baptiste Santamaria and Flavien Tait at SCO Angers and Christopher Wooh in the Cameroon National team. We feel a lot of complicity between the Rennes players on the pitch. Everyone plays for each other and I’m very proud to be part of this project. I am attracted by the goal but above all by the collective and that is the strength of Stade Rennais F.C. I liked the coach’s speech. I do not know him personally but the quality of his work is recognized. Everything was in place to come to Stade Rennais F.C., I am very happy to join his team,” Toko added.

Rennes currently sits fifth on the French ligue 1 table, and president Olivier Cloarec thinks Toko Ekambi will bring more quality to the team.

Toko Ekambi already training with Rennes

“It’s a real satisfaction because it was the objective we had set ourselves with Bruno and Florian. Karl was our top priority. We had announced a calm winter transfer window but we had to adapt to the circumstances. Karl was recruited for his qualities as a goalscorer and his state of mind which was praised to us by all the people we were able to interview, starting with Florian who recruited him from Olympique Lyonnais in 2020. His qualities and his state of mind are recognized and it is hoped that he will put them at the service of the club throughout the next five months,” Olivier Cloarec said.

Toko Ekambi has already started training with Rennes, and has teamed up with his Cameroon national teammate, Christopher Wooh.
