DR Congo, and Congo Republic are preparing a joint bid to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) their government officials signed documents to that effect and to present to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Local media reports suggest the issue was first discussed during a meeting between CAF SG Veron Mosengo Omba and recently-appointed DR Congo’s minister of Sports and Physical Education François Claude Kabulo Mwana.

The meeting which took place in Cairo- Egypt was aimed at discussing rejuvenation of Congo football and both parties saw this as a great opportunity to talk the possibility of hosting the CHAN.

Kinshasa and Lubumbashi in the DR Congo plus Brazzaville and Pointe Noire in Congo are expected to be presented as the proposed host cities for the eighth edition of the competition for players plying their trade in their country.

The two nations want to celebrate the growth of their domestic football and their history in the competition DR Congo won in 2009 and 2016.

DR Congo won the first CHAN tournament in Cote D’Ivoire in 2009 and in Rwanda in 2016 while their neighbors have been regular in the competition.

The Central African bidders plan to offer four major stadia, including Federique Kibasa stadium in Lubumbashi and the Stade de Martyrs in Kinshasa.

Both countries government are yet to comment about the bid, but top sources have confirmed work is ongoing.

Cameroon and Algeria were host of the CHAN in 2021 and this 2023 respectively and both nations raised the organization standards of the competition.

CAF will make a decision about the 2024 host later this year and there are chances the 16-nations competition is held in 2025.
