  • Tegemo Emmanuel could make his CAF Champions League group stage debut at Rivers United
  • The former YOSA skipper watched keenly as Rivers were drawn in a tricky group on Friday
  • Tegemo joined Rivers in the build up to the current season

Tegemo Emmanuel’s Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt have been handed an interesting Group C of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.

The club that eliminated Etoile Filante of Benin to earn the bragging rights as Nigeria’s flag bearers in the ‘money bag’ phase of the competition were handed their next continental task after the draw.

The ceremony televised on Supersport happened on Friday, October 7 in Johannesburg, and put Rivers in Group C, alongside 1991 winners of the African Club of champions – Club Africain, surprised package – APC Lobito and Ghanaian FA Cup winners – Dreams FC.

Bookmakers have termed the group an open one as none of the clubs is a regular in the group stage of the competition.

Tegemo joined the club earlier this year but not in time to be registered for the preliminaries of the competition.

However, the former YOSA skipper is expected to be available for the group stages of the competition as clubs are currently registering players for the group stage.

Last season, Rivers made it to the group stage of the CAF interclub competitions but didn’t achieve the expected result to match their hype.

The group stage of competition will start next month with Tegemo likely to make his CAF interclub competitions debut in any of the six matches.

The top two clubs in terms of points accumulated will advance to the quarter-final of the CAF secondary club competition.

CAF is expected to release the full fixtures and match programs in the days ahead.
