Ivorian midfielder, Seko Fofana has been named man of the match in Côte D’Ivoire’s 2-0 win against Guinea Bissau during the opening game of the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday night at the Allasane Ouatarra stadium in Abidjan.
Fofana scored the competition’s first goal four minutes into the contest and hit the woodwork deep into the first-half in arguably one of the best debut performances for a midfielder at the AFCON.
The Al-Nassr man combined to good effect with Ibrahima Sangare of Nottingham Forest and captain Franck Kessie as the hosts opened their competition in style.
Fofana who had made himself available for his country just before the start of the tournament beat the Guinean defensive set up and fired home from range just four minutes into the contest.
Jean Phillips Kraso made sure it was an opening party when he scored the second just upon resumption for the second segment.
The Guineans produced a few interesting moments, but Jean Louis Gasset’s men held on to make it a perfect start.
Fofana played full throttle and in the end was named man of the match in a decision that’s understandable.
Three-time winner Nigeria will take on Equatorial Guinea in the the other group game this Sunday.
