Qatar 2022: «we go take that cup» Which Cup?

«We go take that cup» a slogan created by comedian Fuh Denise Zang, publicized on and off social media by Cameroonians with sole ambition, see the indomitable lions go all the way in the 22nd edition of the fifa World Cup. A theme that was fueled by the president of fecafoots speech to see the national team play 7 games , even predicting the team to reach the finals and win against Morocco.

To show how deeply imbedded this ambitions were in the heart of Cameroonians , a trend was created on TikTok with lots of creators hopping on the song to «pepper» haters or better still mock detractors of the national team. Twitter wasn’t off the hype, the hashtag #wegotakethatcup kept trending with almost all Facebook conversations surrounding same tag.

But all this will slowly die down after Cameroon’s first game against Switzerland. The indomitable lions who were placed in group G alongside Switzerland, Serbia and Brazil had as first challenge beat the Rossocrociati of Switzerland, a feat that was achievable looking at the great first half the boys of Rigobert Song had against their Swiss opponents.

At halftime, Cameroonians looked pretty convinced the second half will be worth the while, well it didn’t turn out so as Breel Embolo 48th minute goal will break hearts and dash hopes, a lone goal that Choupo Moting and teammates could not come back from as the score will end 1 nil, leaving Cameroon 3rd on the table with no point.

The internet then was calm. No proud chants by the Lions’ fans, «wegotakethatcup» was still on the trends table, but this time it accompanied criticisms over Rigobert Songs choices and the lack of zeal by the team in the second half of play against the Swiss.

Yet all hope wasn’t lost as the next opponent was still not five times Champions brazil, feared by many fans, as defeat to them will mean Cameroon’s abrupt elimination.

Despite the hope, the defeat had dealt a huge blow on some supporters who had seized from using the tag. Others used it to ridicule the team , showcasing different cups that could be brought back to Cameroon, other than the prestigious World Cup trophy.

To back this Swift change of things, the narratives turned into «allcupnacup» or better still if we cannot win the cup, we go thief the cup.

Cameroon vs Serbia, controversy stroke hours to the game. The suspension of first choice keeper Andre Onana and the introduction of Davis Epassy, a name not so common amongst fans of the lions, helped burry every hope Cameroonians had of a comeback, as statistics shows his last match with the lions date as far back as 8th October 2021, against Mozambique, while Onana had been active at club level and with the national team.

The first-half second of the game left not much to be desired until the 29minute when defender Jean Charles Castelletto put Cameroon forward. The internet went bonkers in that split second, with the tag #wegotakethatcup in almost all tweets and post.

The joy will not last long, as it was drowned by Serbia equalizer and second goal in the space of 2 minutes and a 3rd just minutes into second half.

As disappointed fans left the different fan sites out of cheer shame, so did the internet become void of any hope of Cameroon’s qualification. But as fate will have it, the introduction of Vincent Abouchou, changed the trajectory of things. Aboubakar chipped a wonderful goal and provided an assist to Choupo Moting for the 3rd, making it 3-3.

At this time the trends table only had team Cameroon, Abouchou (Vincent Aboubakar) and team mates, who were celebrated for putting smile once more on the faces of Cameroonians. The support was present, but the hope of qualifying and winning the World Cup was almost inexistent as Cameroon’s 3 all tie meant her fate was to be decided by the winners between Serbia and Switzerland in the last group game, that is if they beat Brazil.

A positive takeout from this though was Cameroon finally got the cup, not the World Cup trophy, but Vincent Aboubakar man of the man award.

The last game against Brazil finally came, though Cameroon’s chances of reaching the last 16 hanged on a swinging pendulum, fans couldn’t stop rallying support for the team, #wegotakethatcup has been completely replaced with just praises for the team spirit and the beautiful goal scored by captain Aboubakar.

Cameroon did the needful against Brazil and got all 3 points from the best team in the world according to the current FIFA rankings, unfortunately they fell short. But yet again they got a cup. Davis Epassy brilliant performance earned him man of the man, giving him a second cup for Cameroon in the FIFA World Cup and bragging rights for the fans.

Vincent Aboubakar and Epassy Mbota display man of the match trophies

Yes!!!! Cameroon played three match instead of seven, but the team got two cups at the end of their stay in Qatar, looking at this from this angle WE GOT THE CUPS.
