Blaise Fuh Ndiforchu struck the only goal as PWD of Bamenda opened their 2023/24 MTN Elite One season with a 1-0 against Bamboutos FC of Mbouda on Thursday in Dieudonne Nke’s first outing as coach of the Abakwa Boys.
The former Rangers front man settled the heated grass field derby at the Kouekong stadium with an excellent finish just before the break. Blaise’s 44th minute goal was enough for the Abakwa boys to bag their first win against their eternal rivals in six meetings.
Long-serving PWD of Bamenda forward, John Paul Nzong connected with Blaise and the latter put the ball past Benjamin Munya in goal for the Mangwa boys.
Bamboutos FC took the game to the Abakwa Boys after conceding but Billy Samin, Nkengne Amede and the rest of the team defended resolutely to earn the three points and the clean sheet to mark the first outing of the season.
Though Bamboutos FC threw their everything at the home side in an attempt to find their way back into the contest, it wasn’t to be as debutant Saliou Ahmadou signed from Cotonsport simply kept them out.
The three points from the start is a good bolster for coach Nke and his team ahead of Sunday’s clash away to his former club, Canon Yaoundé while Ghanaian coach Asare Bediako has quick-fix to do before hosting Gazelle FA on Sunday.
PWD could have midfielder Mark O’Ojong for the contest away to Canon as the club race to have his license issued before then.
The game will be an interesting one for goalkeeper Karim Bello who helped Canon to a 2-1 win against Colombe in match day one. The netminder left PWD in acrimonious circumstances ahead of the 2023/24 season.
