The coach and President of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Nationwide side, Royaltoms Queens of Sango Ota, Ogun State, Olajide Royal says the importance of the maiden Ogun State First Lady’s Cup was to develop talents and women’s football in the state.

The maiden Ogun State First Lady’s Cup tagged “Bamidele Abiodun’s Cup” was concluded last weekend with Chosen Generation Angels winning the title after a 1-0 victory over Royaltoms Queens in the final match at Gateway Stadium, Sagamu, Ogun State.

“It’s a very good initiative. Globally, FIFA is trying to make sure that women’s football gains more ground. We have the interest of promoting grassroots football within our power to ensure that women’s football game develop in Ogun State and the country entirely.”Olajide told www.kick442.com.

For the likes of Castmog FA, Royaltoms Queens, and Ijebu United Queens, the competition also served as preparatory ground for next season’s third-tier NWFL Nationwide.

“With the maiden edition of the First Lady Cup in Ogun State, we have been able to develop some talents.” Royal continued. “Definitely, next year, we will be able to see some players that will also come up that want to play. It will also be an avenue for those coming up to be discovered next year and for them to grow into the game. We expect it to be an annual event.

“This pre-season is part of the team’s preparation for the NWFL Nationwide. We still have some other programs ahead that we will use to prepare the girls. At least, with this, we have been able to see where to work and improve on the girls and by the time we have the NWFL Nationwide, the team will be ready for it.”

The 2022 Bamidele Abiodun’s Cup was organised by Female Football Club Owners, Ogun State Chapter in honour of Ogun State First Lady, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun.

Five teams; Chosen Generation Angels, Royaltoms Queens, Castmog FA, Female Machine, and Ijebu United Queens participated in the maiden edition.
