The 2000 Generation of the indomitable lions of Cameroon will play a friendly encounter against the same generation of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Limbe, South West region of Cameroon.

The friendly match to hold on the sidelines of the Plantain-Banana festival will take place on Thursday November 30, 2023.

Surprisingly, some players who made their name during that generation and were instrumental in Cameroon winning the 2000 Africa Nations cup have been left out of the list of players to take part in the match.

Patrick Mboma who scored in the AFCON 2000 final, Geremi Sorel Njitap, Pierre Beyaka, Lauren Etame who took penalties amongst others have been left out for reasons not disclosed. It’s unclear if the current atmosphere between FECAFOOT and SYNAFOC led by Geremi could have influenced the decision.

Cameroon’s golden squad of AFCON 2000

Surprisingly, players who didn’t form a major part of that era in Cameroon senior national team have been called up per the list signed by the President of the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers, Lucien Mettomo.

The event reserved for retired footballers has attracted a number of top players of Nigeria’s golden generation expected to arrive Cameroon on Tuesday, November 28.

The likes of Jay Jay Okocha, Tijani Babangida, Victor Ikpeba amongst others of those good old days are expected to grace the event.

The football match is an innovation to the laudable initiative aimed at encouraging footballers to invest in large scale bananas plantation upon retirement.

The match up between the star-studded sides will bring back memories of the interesting 2-2 AFCON 2000 final which Cameroon went on to win on post-match penalties.

The last edition of the event took place in the South Region, but ended off the pitch.

This year’s innovation to include a match for legends has drawn praises from football stakeholders across the board, though some face difficulty in reconciling the absence of some of the big names.
