As Nigeria’s senior women’s national team prepares to face Cameroon in the third round of the Paris 2024 Olympics Qualifiers, reports making rounds in Nigeria have it that the contract of the head coach, Randy Waldrum has been extended for a year.

After taking the team to the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the contract of the University of Pittsburgh coach expired at the end of October 2023.

His assistant, Justine Madugu took over while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continue contract negotiations.

Madugu took the team through to qualify for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ad interim, the NFF continued negotiations with Waldrum to ensure continuity.

With the extension of the contract of Waldrum for another year, he is expected to take charge of the team’s Olympics Qualifiers against Cameroon.

Should the team progress past the Indomitable Lionesses, they will face either African champions, South Africa, or Tanzania in the final round of Qualifiers.

The team has not qualified for the past three editions of the women’s football event of the Olympics which put the coach in a tight corner to end this drought.

After that, Waldrum is also expected to take the team to the next WAFCON in Morocco, a return to familiar terrain where he led the team to a fourth-placed finish.

Redemption is the key word for the coach as he prepares to resume duties in a bid to consolidate on the gains from the Round of 16 finish at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
