MTN Elite One Playoffs: Lamin, Ekanga on target as Bamboutos edge Canon 2-1

Ali Lamin Betoro A Dang, William Ekanga Lobe of Bamboutos FC of Mbouda were on target alongside Canon’s Henri Paul Tchikeu as the Mangwa Boys outclassed Kpakum 2-1 in their first outing in this season’s MTN Elite One title play-offs.

Bamboutos FC raised the roofs in the second game at the Reunification stadium Bepanda, counting for Day one of the 2022/23 MTN Elite One playoffs this Sunday, defeated 11-time winners, Canon.

It took the Bangwa boys just nine minutes into the game to take the lead through Ali Lamin Betoro, who stroke past Mbaynaissam Jourdain, benefitting from an absent minded Canon defense.

Ten minutes later, William Ekanga Lobe doubled the lead for Bamboutos with a long shot from inside the box that was sent to the back of the net after another unsteady backline and lack of understanding between captain Moukoko and his colleagues.

In just 19 minutes from kickoff, 11 time champions, Canon, were already in serious trouble.

Emmanuel Mahopp whose expertise and goals were needed to reverse the deficit, was almost invisible on the pitch.

Bamboutos continued it’s dominance and prevented Canon from breaking into her territory as efforts from Alexandre Essomba and Junior Stephane failed to pay off.

Frustrated coach Souleymanou Aboubakar then brought in Ngong Neville with hopes for a change.

Hopes of a comeback grew in at the 83 minute after a beautiful header from Henri Paul Tchikeu beat Benjamin Mbunya at goal for Bamboutos FC.

That ended up to be just a consolatory goal for the Kpakum boys who seemed to have come into this encounter with no change of strategy unlike Bamboutos.

Bamboutos carried the day and have now gather momentum ahead of their next meeting with Cotonsport of Garoua scheduled for Thursday, May 18.
