Bamboutos FC of Mbouda goalkeeper Patrick Leonel Kibyen says he is happy but wish it was better after his club mauled Gazelle FA by 4-1 this Sunday at the Bepanda Omnisport stadium in Douala to finish the 2022/23 MTN Elite One championship season as runners-up to unstoppable Cotonsport of Garoua.
Kibyen made his return between the sticks this Sunday as Bamboutos FC picked up a second win of the playoffs to take their points tally to six and achieve their best ever finish in Elite 1.
The Keeper’s saves in the opening moments of the game were crucial as they kept the Mangwa Boys alive until they took control of the game and scored four.
Reacting post-match the Cameroon international couldn’t hide his emotions.
“We are very happy though a little disappointed because we could have won this championship. However we can’t ignore finishing second. We have done better than last season. We hope that we can win this championship in the years to come,” Kibyen said.
Bamboutos FC guided by coach Yves Clement Arroga had an amazing run in this season’s championship but fell short when it mattered most, against eventual champions Cotonsport in the penultimate playoffs game.
They showed progress during the competition but Cotonsport was in a different gear.
Kibyen has flipped the league page and set his sights on a new challenge.
“We switch our intentions now to the cup of Cameroon and work had to see if we can have a good run like last season,” the former New Stars of Douala custodian added.
Bamboutos FC will switch their attention to Littoral Regional League side African Football Academy in the 32nd final of the 2023 Cup of Cameroon.
Kibyen will be key for the Mangwa Boys if they want to enjoy another good run.
