Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced his country is backing out of the race to organize the 2023 Women’s CAF Champions League, and will support Cote D’Ivoire’s candidacy.

The celebrated football administrator made the announcement this Thursday afternoon during the ongoing CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cotonou, Benin.

“After careful analysis, we have decided to pull out of the race to organize the 2023 Women’s CAF Champions League, but pledge our support to Cote D’Ivoire who need the competition to enhance their preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament,” President Lekjaa explained.

CAF closed the bidding process on May 6. Morocco had tabled their interest to host the competition again, but has now pulled out.

The move from the Moroccan Football family further highlights its commitment to build strong ties with other member Associations on the continent.

Cote D’Ivoire will host the AFCON next year for the first time since 1984. Having the CAF Champions League in the West African nation will serve as a teaser for events in January-February 2024.

Morocco can pride herself as one of the most hospitable and supportive member associations on the continent in the past decade.

Morocco’s kind gestures towards other football associations on the continent has ranged from offering free infrastructures, training schemes for coaches, and competitive matches among others.

The North African nation is bookmakers favorite to win the rights to host AFCON 2025 and has tabled an irresistible intercontinental bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, alongside Spain and Portugal.

Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat are current holders of the CAF Champions League title which they won last year on home soil.
