The Atlas Lions of Morocco may participate at the 48th edition of the Copa America scheduled for 2024 June-July of that year in Ecuador, this following an invitation from a majority of the members of the South American football confederation (CONMEBOL), per African Football hub Nuhu Adams.
According to multiple sources, Morocco has received a letter to the above effect, meaning they could become the first ever African country to participate in the competition if they decide to honour the invitation.
The brilliant performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup could have contributed to COMNEBOL attraction to Africa’s reference nation.
We understand the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) will deliberate about the invitation in the days ahead before taking a final decision. However, Moroccans being hospitable Africans don’t have history of turning down invitations.
It should be noted that the Copa America is the lone continental tournament in the world that accommodates a team from out of the continent to participate as Guest of honour.
Qatar’s National team were guest at the last edition but this time around, 2022 FIFA World Cup semi finalist have the privilege to experience the 10-team competition.
Argentina are defending champions of this competition and go into next year’s tournament as favourites though the likes of Brazil, Uruguay and now Morocco could unsettle them.
