France began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal, with Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise producing standout performances to give Les Bleus a winning start in Group I.
Didier Deschamps’ side took control of the contest through their attacking quality, with Olise playing a key role in unlocking the Senegalese defence while captain Mbappé once again delivered on the biggest stage.
Senegal, making their fourth World Cup appearance, started brightly and created chances of their own, with Nicolas Jackson striking the post during the first half. However, the African champions were made to pay for missed opportunities as France gradually asserted their dominance.
Olise’s creativity and movement caused constant problems for the Lions of Teranga, while Mbappé’s pace and finishing proved decisive as the 2018 world champions secured all three points.
The match also saw Mbappé continue his remarkable rise in World Cup history. The French captain became the highest-scoring French player in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Just Fontaine’s tally, while also moving into the top ten all-time World Cup scorers. Still only 27, Mbappé further strengthened his chances of challenging Miroslav Klose’s all-time record in future tournaments.
Despite the defeat, Senegal showed moments of promise and managed to get on the scoresheet, but they ultimately struggled to contain France’s firepower.
The victory places France in a strong position in Group I ahead of their second match against Iraq, while Senegal will seek a response when they face Norway in a crucial encounter.
For the Lions of Teranga, who reached the Round of 16 in Qatar four years ago and remain reigning African champions, there is still plenty to play for despite the disappointing opening result.
