The Berea of Madagascar have been welcomed by thousands of compatriots in the streets of Antananarivo on Sunday, as a result of their TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) exploits.
The main streets of the country’s capital city were filled by the large crowd as coach Romuald Felix’s team returned home from an unforgettable experience in Algeria.
The debutants surpassed expectations during their first CHAN tournament. They defeated Ghana, Sudan, Mozambique and Niger on their way to a third place finish.
Their 1-0 win against Niger in the classification game on Friday to secure a rare top three finish for a debutant in the competition.
Madagascar won their Coach Romauld Felix’s team won four of their five matches in the seventh edition of the tournament exclusively for players licensed in their country.
Madagascar outclassed group rivals Ghana and Sudan before beating Mozambique 3-1 in the last eight.
They narrowly lost to eventual Senegal in the semi-final, but Jean Yves Razafindrokoto scored to earn bronze for the World’s second largest Island.
Olivier Randriatsiferana scored three goals during the tournament. He was the most attractive player to the fans during the parade.
