  • Leonel Wamba’s hat-trick in 11 minutes is the fastest in the preliminaries of this season’s CAF Champions League
  • CR Belouzidad beat Bo Rangers 6-2 on aggregate advance to the group stage of the 2023/24 competition
  • Wamba’s hat-trick is his first in the CAF interclub competition

Wamba Leonel Djouffo scored a hat-trick in 11 minutes to help Algerian giants CR Belouzidad reach the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, following a 3-1 comeback win against Bo Rangers this Monday, which completed a 6-2 aggregate success.

The Cameroonian forward scored all three goals in the final 11 minutes of the second segment to secure a spot in the group stage of the CAF flagship club competition for the second season running.

Belouzidad entered the contest on the night in full confidence, given their lead from the reversed fixture.

However, Sierra Leone international, Ibrahim Turay gave the visitors a shock lead after nine minutes at the Olympic Stadium in Oran. The goal silenced the home fans who had come expecting a goal feast, especially because of the logistics problems faced by Rangers in the build up to the game.

Belouzidad had their fair share of dominance after conceding, but more often than not they were wanting in the final third.

Rangers could have extended their advantage before the interval, if not from a world class save from AFCON 2019 winner, Rais M’Boli on goal for Belouzidad.

Coach Sven Vandenbroek’s Belouzidad pushed to get at least an equalizer before the interval, but their visitors held their advantage throughout the first-half.

Last year’s quarter-finalist, Belouzidad were more incisive with their offensive moves in the second segment though were made to wait for their moment.

Wamba finally had the first return on his energy invested all night when he stepped up and converted a 79th minute penalty to level scores. The 2019 U-17 AFCON winner completed his brace a minute later making it 2-1 for the host ten minutes from time.

The 21-year-old former Aigle Royal forward completed his first CAF Champions League hat-trick at the 90th minute, when he pounced on a cross to make it 3-1.

The game finished 3-1 in favor of Belouzidad, completing a 6-2 aggregate win for the Algerians who will be ceded in pot 2 during the group stage draw.

Wamba is in his second season at the club, having joined them from Latvian side, Spartaks last season and scored six goals.
