Guy-Marcelin Kilama helped Hatayspor salvage a draw away to Nicolas Nkoulou’s Gaziantep on Sunday evening on match day 35 of the 2023/24 Turkish Super League at the Gaziantep stadium.

Kilama’s 15th minute equalizer for the visitors and his second goal of the season ended being all it took for relegation-threatened Hatayspor to pick up a crucial away point and stay within touching distance of their host while still in the relegation zone.

On a strange night of goals from center-backs, Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji put the host ahead only after 11 minutes of the interesting contest.

Unfortunately, for Gaziantep FK who had Nkoulou operating in their midfield, the lead didn’t last. Kilama replied four minutes after they conceded, leveling scores to ensure they stayed alive in the contest.

There were chances at both ends of the post to make the game even more entertaining but poor finishing and good goalkeeping denied the fans the privilege. It finished level, leaving both sides with just a point to add to their tally before this round of matches.

The draw leaves Gaziantep with 40 points and just outside the relegation zone, one point better than Hatayspor who remain directly below them in the first relegation position.

Though it’s not been a glorifying season in defending for Hatayspor, Kilama has been outstanding, featuring in 32 games, from which he has scored twice and made one assist.

The 24-year-old has been one of the most consistent center-backs in the Turkish Super League this season.

This former FC Niort man who will turn 25 this May 30th is certainly enjoying his second season in Turkish football – having moved only last season.

Hatayspor will host 12th place Ankaragücü in the next round of matches next Sunday while Nkoulou’s Gaziantep FK travels to Besiktas of Vincent Aboubakar.

In a related development, Olivier Kemen was on target on Saturday to help Istanbul Basaksehir to a 4-1 win against Kasimpasa FK.
