Cameroon international, Karl Toko Ekambi has joined Al-Ettifaq FC, a club based in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, from Abha FC in January 2024.
The transfer was announced on Instagram on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, with a warm welcome message to the new recruit.
The 31-year-old forward agreed to end his two-year contract with Abha FC after only six months and move to Al-Ettifaq FC, after both sides came to an agreement on his transfers
He had a decent performance with Abha FC, appearing in 17 games, scoring seven goals and providing one assist. He helped his former club avoid relegation and finish 11th in the Saudi Pro League. Before joining Abha FC, he had a successful career in Europe.
The 2021 AFCON bronze medallist , began his career in France, where he played for Paris FC, Sochaux, and Angers in the lower divisions. He then moved to Spain, where he joined Villarreal in 2018. He had a successful spell with the Spanish club, scoring 16 goals in 52 appearances in La Liga. He also played on loan for Lyon and Rennes in France, where he won the Coupe de France in 2020.
Ekambi is expected to be a valuable addition to Al-Ettifaq, which is aiming to challenge for the top positions in the Saudi Pro League. He will join forces with other talented players, such as the Ivorian midfielder Seko Fofana and the Saudi winger Khalid Al-Ghannam.
He will also have the opportunity to work with Steven Gerrard, manager of the side, wildly regarded one of the best midfielders of his generation.
