  • Less than 20% of African domestic championship management bodies have adopted the use of VAR for domestic competitions
  • CAF new trend of using VAR at all stages of the ongoing AFCON in Côte D’Ivoire is a signal of what is to come
  • Morocco, Algeria, Tunisians who use the VAR at home dominated the numbers of Referees retained for the ongoing AFCON

The members of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) technical study group have revealed life in the nearest future will be tough for Referees whose countries fail to adopt the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

The declaration was made Monday, February 5 in the presence of over 200 media organizations as the panel dominated by ex-footballers exposed their works throughout the one-month African Football jamboree.

Speaking about Referees matters going forward during the interaction, Cameroonian goalkeeping legend and renowned commentator, Joseph Antoine Bell told the media the future promises less international competitions for Referees from countries without VAR.

“It will be difficult for Referees from countries without VAR at their domestic leagues to work at CAF competitions”.

The ongoing 2023 AFCON in Côte D’Ivoire marked the first CAF major which has endorsed the full use of the VAR.

The entry of the technology has won praises for African Referees who somehow thrived despite the challenge of using the technology at a global event without regular domestic experience.

Unlike Morocco, Algeria, Less 70% of the African domestic championship these days have adopted the use of the technology due to a combination of lack of resources and unwillingness to embrace it.

If the current trend is maintained the likes of Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and more have a strong chance of dominating in CAF competitions due to their experience provided by the use of the VAR almost on a weekly basis.
