Guinea has triumphantly clinched the last available slot in the men’s football event for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, edging out Indonesia with a narrow 1-0 victory in the intercontinental playoff.

The pivotal match unfolded at France’s esteemed Clairefontaine National Training Center on Thursday, May 9.

It was Guinea’s own Ilaix Moriba who emerged as the hero, netting the sole goal at the 29th minute, propelling the “National Elephants” to their second-ever Olympic journey.

The turning point arrived just as the first half approached its end, with Algassime Bah tumbling inside the penalty area due to a challenge from Indonesia’s Witan Sulaeman amidst a swift counter by Guinea. Moriba seized the moment, delivering a precise finish that carved the path to Olympic qualification.

After the interval, Guinea nearly extended their lead, but Mohamed Soumah’s effort from close quarters was thwarted, cleared just before crossing the goal line.

Indonesia, yearning for their first Olympic participation since 1956, displayed commendable tenacity but ultimately couldn’t breach Guinea’s steadfast defensive line. The youthful Garuda team forged numerous scoring opportunities, yet the equalizing goal remained elusive.

Substitute Alfeandra Dewangga nearly altered the game’s narrative with a deft header, but it drifted agonizingly wide.

This momentous qualification ends a 56-year hiatus for Guinea, revisiting the Olympic football stage for the first time since the 1968 Mexico Games. They are set to join the ranks of Group A alongside host nation France, the United States, and New Zealand in Paris 2024.

The sentiments gathered from the site, Friends of Football, captured the elation of coach Kaba Diawara over this landmark accomplishment:

“We’ve made it, thus inscribing a new chapter in history with this youthful squad. Their dedication has paid off. This marks Guinea’s second Olympic venture, and we aim to make a significant impact,” Kaba Diawara explained.

To team captain Saidou Sow, it’s a historic moment unseen since their maiden appearance.

“Our joy is boundless; we’ve crafted a historic moment, unseen since 1968. Now, we revel in our success and eagerly anticipate the Olympics. Our group in France poses challenges, yet we’re determined to triumph, to contend, and to showcase Guinea’s prowess. We’ll face our adversaries head-on, fully prepared. For me, playing at Parc des Princes, amidst my kin and comrades, fulfills a lifelong dream,” Saidou remarked.

Guinea now stands among the quartet of African nations—alongside Morocco, Egypt, and Mali—set to compete in the men’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
