In football matches, a referee is the person responsible for interpreting and enforcing the Laws of the game and applying them.

The referee is the final decision-making authority on all facts connected with play. Added to that, he is the match official with the authority to start and stop play and impose disciplinary action against players and coaches during a match.

The referee is usually assisted by two assistant referees who advise him or her.  In standard settings, they are complemented by the 4th fourth official, the referees inspector and match commissioner.

In Cameroon, just like in any other country, referees are the main actors of the game and are managed by the Central Referees Commission, with it’s french acronym CCA. The institution is under the Cameroon Football Federation which pays officials per the competition they are involved in.

But how much are the referees paid in Cameroon?

From our findings, in Divisional league referees and assistant referees are paid an average of 6.000FCFA per match officiated.

In the regional championship, the referees, assistant referees as well as match commissioners receives an average of 12.000FCFA. we gathered that some regions pay 10.000FCFA while others pay between 12.000 to 14.000FCFA per match.

In the Cameroon Professional Football League, payments vary per the Elite One and Two championships.

Per our findings, all elite One referees receive a match bonus of 30.000FCFA per match. In cases where the referee is a FIFA referee, there’s an extra 5.000FCFA added to their match bonus.

Meanwhile, referees in the Elite two championship receive 20.000FCFA as match bonus.

We gathered that, added to the match bonus, the referees are also paid transportation allowance which is calculated per their distance.

For example, a referee leaving Yaounde for a game in Bamenda  is given 12.000FCFA as transportation allowance to and fro. Those leaving other towns, the transportation is calculated as per the distance.

In addition, the referees are also paid lodging and feeding allowances.

On average, an elite One referee receives per match approximately 81.000FCFA per match (86.000FCFA for a FIFA referee) for match bonus, transportation, lodging and feeding.

In the elite two championship, there’s a difference at the level of the match bonus per match.

In the Guinness Super League, the top tier of women’s football, we learned the situation is different.

The female referees have a slight difference in their payment as compared to their male counterparts.

Averagely, they receive a minimum of 50.000FCFA. The amount varies as per their distance.

It should be noted that the payment of referees is discrete as they are paid via Mobile Money.

Meanwhile, for international matches at the level of CAF, the payment is $1200 per match.

For FIFA international matches, any referee appointed receives an upfront payment of $10.000 and they have a daily motivation of $300 per day.
