  • Zambo Anguissa became the first player to complete 75 passes this season in the Serie A
  • Napoli beat Monza 2-0 to secure three points that take them atop the championship.

High-flying SSC Napoli of André-Frank Zambo Anguissa moved to the top of Serie A after getting a comfortable 2-0 win over Monza at home on Sunday courtesy of goals from forwards Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia all in the first segment.

On paper, the visit of a winless Monza side to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona seemed like the ideal opportunity to continue that resurgence.

Antonio Conte’s men continued their impressive run at home in the championship this season though Monza started off disciplined and compact at the back before conceding twice.

Politano profited from their error to snatch the ball and strike low inside the far post, putting Napoli ahead in the 22nd minute before Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead for the hosts in the 33rd minute with a volley from near the penalty spot.

It looked like a case of normal service resumed after the break, with Kvaratskhelia anticipating Warren Bondo’s indecision in midfield to play in Lukaku, but the Belgian’s effort was blocked by Pablo Mari.

There were some signs of encouragement for the visitors though, with Elia Caprile forced into his first meaningful action of the game to save Milan Đurić’s header, before Daniel Maldini’s eye-catching free-kick skimmed the side-netting.

Despite the second-half endeavour from the Biancorossi, it was not enough to get on the scoresheet and leave Alexandro Nesta’s side as one of only two teams – along with Cagliari – yet to taste victory in Serie A this season. They remain 19th, while Conte’s men are now sitting pretty in pole position – a point clear of Juventus.

Though the scorers were the major attraction of the day, Zambo Anguissa’s 75 successful of 79 attempted passes was a new Serie A feat this season.
