Indomitable lions captain Vincent Aboubakar, has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo tried to persuade him to stay at Al-Nassr but his mind was already made.
Aboubakar re-signed with Turkish club Beşiktaş on January 21, 2023, for his third stint at the club, putting an end to his 19-months stay with Saudi pro league side Al-Nassr.
The arrival of Portuguese super star Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly paved the way for Aboubakar’s exit, with several rumors that the club had to lay off the Cameroon captain so as to accommodate more foreign players in their ranks.
Speaking to Talents d’Afrique on Canal plus, 31-year-old Aboubakar stated that he had already made up his mind to leave Al-Nassr and even Ronaldo’s attempts to convince him stay at the club could not change his position.
“Yes, I talked a bit with Cristiano. From our exchange, he would have liked me to stay but I told him, I want to leave,” Aboubakar told Talent d’Afrique.
“He asked me where my family was, I told him in France and that it will be easier for me to see them being in Turkey and he said ok,” the forward added.
Aboubakar however disclosed that he left angry.
“I left a little angry. With the arrival of Cristiano (Ronaldo), I made the coach understand that before his arrival I already wanted to leave. If I find something good I will leave. But the club wanted me to stay and was even ready to pay my salary until the end of the season and I told the president that I preferred to leave.”
The former FC Porto goal poacher starred during his third world cup, when he netted twice and provided an assist in Qatar 2022.
His late winner against Brazil ensured that Cameroon became the first African country to beat the Samba Boys at the world cup.
“During the match against Serbia, I told Mbaizo (Olivier) that against Switzerland I had 15 minutes, if they give me only 20 minutes, I will be decisive. I knew we were going to beat Brazil,” Aboubakar Vincent added.
Aboubakar has already featured in four league games for Beşiktaş since his return, but is yet open his goal scoring account.
