Cape Verde’s dream introduction to the FIFA World Cup ended with a famous 0-0 draw against Spain, as the Blue Sharks produced one of the biggest stories of the opening round of the 2026 tournament.
Making their first appearance on football’s biggest stage, the island nation frustrated one of the pre-tournament favourites with a disciplined defensive display and outstanding goalkeeping from veteran captain Vozinha. Spain dominated possession and created several chances, but Cape Verde remained organised and resilient throughout, while also threatening on the counterattack late in the game.
The undisputed hero of the afternoon was goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old produced a string of crucial saves to deny the Spanish attack and preserve a historic clean sheet. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award and capped a remarkable personal achievement.

At 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha became the oldest player ever to make his FIFA World Cup debut, surpassing the previous record set by Canada’s Atiba Hutchinson at the 2022 tournament, when he made his first World Cup appearance at 39 years and 288 days. Remarkably, the Cape Verdean shot-stopper made his international debut 14 years ago and delivered one of the finest performances of his career on football’s biggest stage.
The result also carried historical significance for African football. Cape Verde became the first African nation in 24 years to avoid defeat in their first-ever World Cup match since Senegal stunned defending champions France in their debut appearance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
For Spain, the stalemate represents two valuable points dropped in Group H. For Cape Verde, however, the draw feels like a victory. A nation of fewer than one million inhabitants stood toe-to-toe with one of world football’s superpowers and refused to blink.
Cape Verde leave Atlanta with their first-ever World Cup point, a clean sheet against the world champions, and a result that will forever occupy a special place in the country’s sporting history.
