Initially scheduled to start on Thursday, June 20, the return leg games of the Littoral Regional league have been postponed due to an ongoing referee strike over unpaid wages. League president Robert Louis Mbekek issued a note informing the public of this decision.
In a crisis meeting held this Wednesday, match officials demanded the full payment of their bonuses, totaling over 10 million, before they would resume officiating matches. The referees categorically refused to participate in the announced games until all outstanding fees were settled. The league’s president convened and chaired the meeting, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the crisis.
In an interview with Kick 442, Ngon Mbeleck, president of the Littoral Regional Referees Association, expressed dissatisfaction with Wednesday’s meeting, as the league failed to meet their demands. He stated, “We had a consultation to end the crisis, but unfortunately, it didn’t yield positive results. We remain open for future discussions.”
The association of referees, concerned about the league’s suspension, seeks minimum respect from league administration. They emphasize that their role is not to halt the championship but to protect their work by officiating games. While they acknowledge the efforts of club presidents and the league, they insist on strict adherence to their association’s rights. Their conditions are reasonable, and they are not asking for extravagant concessions.
Unified under one banner, the referees association stands firm. Colleagues from different divisions, including Moungo, Nkam, and Sanaga Maritime, attended the meeting, demonstrating solidarity. They recognize that their association’s integrity is essential for their role as referees and their membership in the Cameroon Football Federation.
As of now, no specific deadline has been set for payment. Referees remain flexible, willing to officiate games promptly once their dues are settled. The strike action has affected both men’s and women’s football in the region.
