Jules Armand Kooh of Les Astre of Douala was arguably the brightest performer in match day two of the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship.

The former Stade Renard and Avion Academy scored twice but his goals couldn’t prevent his side’s 2-3 defeat against newfound City rival in the first-ever top-flight championship meeting of the two clubs.

The nine fixtures of this round of matches came to a conclusion on Monday night after Canon Yaounde’s 2-0 win against 2020 champions, PWD of Bamenda.

At end of the match day, 17 players had their name on the score sheet while others contributed in diversed manners to ensure they add value to their clubs.

Veteran Joseph Momasso scored and assisted for Dynamo while Katche Boris of Bamboutos FC scored his first goal and won the penalty Mani Koupit converted to ensure the Mangwa Boys beat Gazelle FA 2-0.

Randin Ngongeh’s solo strike was all it took Stade Renard to register their first win of the season.

Results and breakdown

Group A

Aigle Royal 0-1 AS Fortuna
Adrien Boris Mfoumou 44′

AS Fortuna continued their display of their defensive know-how as they kept a second consecutive clean sheet and scored their first goal of the season.

Adrien Boris Mfoumou scored the line goal just a minute before the recess. That goal was all coach Max Makolle’s team needed to maintain their strong start of the season.

Amine Hiver who was a live wire for Aigle in match day one was silenced throughout the game.

Fortuna are unbeaten so far with four points from two outings.

Bamboutos Mbouda 2-0 Gazelle FA
Katche Boris 36′, Mani Koupit (pen)76′

In his first start of the new season, the former Rangers of Bafut finisher took just 36 minutes to announce his arrival in Mangwa Boys colors.

He beat Mbahbi Marcelin after 36 minutes and won the penalty Koupit converted to ensure they return to winning ways after the shock defeat to PWD of Bamenda on match day one.

Astres Douala 2-3 Dynamo Douala
Armand Kooh 1′, 90+5 (pen)|| Ateba Leonel 30′, Benjamin Louke 36′, Joseph Momaso 41′

Kooh scored his second goal of the season after 26 seconds and completed his brace from the spot with almost the final kick of the game. However, goals from Momasso Joseph, Benjamin Louke and Leonel Ateba Christian were enough to give it all to Dynamo. The newbie left their fans in total jubilation of their first top-flight win in over 20 years.

Group B

Avion Academy 1-1 Fovu Baham
Alain Nandjou 50’|| Boukar Gueime 81′

This was the early kick-off of the weekend. The fixture got underway just after lunch time, on instructions from Referee Elouga Bikim and played at a frantic paste.

Avion were the better side for most of the contest and could have won it if not for a late strike from Miskey Boukar Gueime which cancelled the 50th minute advantage Alain Roland Nandjou had given the host.

Fovu deserved the point for their efforts on the day, though a win for Avion Academy wouldn’t have been unfair either.

Apejes Mfou 1-1 YOSA
Anise Nlend 58’|| Nchindo John Bosco 15′

Leading YOSA as skipper from the start of the campaign, Nchindo didn’t disappoint.

The creative midfielder took just 15 minutes to score the opener. A great cross from the left wing off the boots of former Options Sports Academy forward Engelbert found his mate who laid it on the path of Nchindo to beat Ambassa Messobo in the APEJES goal.

Former Aigle Royal forward Arnise Nlend Guddus leveled the contest just after the pause. Both sides were constraint to share the spoils in the end as there wasn’t another goal despite their efforts.

The result is a repeat of the score obtained in the June 2022 meeting. That game and Sunday’s are the only two in the last seven meetings to produce two goals. Four of the games in that time have ended goalless while the other was a one-nil win for APEJES, who count two points in two games this season.

Cotonsport Garoua 1-0 Victoria United

Agada Georges Naphtali 10′

Agada Georges scored the only goal of the game with a bullet strike that hit the woodwork before coming off under the goal line after just ten minutes. It took extra vigilance of Referee Bito Jeanot and his crew to make the big and correct call that turned out to be the game’s decider.

The first meeting between the clubs in over two decades had it fair share of talking points but defending champions, Cotonsport held their nerves to cross the finish line with maximum points as Goni Ali and Patrick Etoga Atchom sealed a second clean sheet in two outings for the Garoua outfit to make it 4 points in two games.

Canon 2-0 PWD
Phillipe Essama Bertin 31′
Steve Belobo 76′

Essama and Belobo scored in each half to earn a deserved victory for the Mekok Megunda on the wet evening at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium.

Canon dominated the game and were a little more clinical in the final third of the historic contest.

PWD conceded twice without replying to bring an end to a 19-year run without a defeat against Canon in Yaoundé

Stade Renard 1-0 Fauve Azur
Randin Ngongeh 42′

Former ISOHSA skipper Randin Ngongeh’s 42nd minute strike was all it took for the hosts to register their first win of the season and first in David Pagou era.

Stade Renard has had a strong start of the season – a draw away to Cotonsport and a win against an interesting Facts Azur Elite side is a situation the club will have accepted if they were given that proposal before the start.

Colombe 1-1 Union Sportive of Douala

Anyouaze P 8′ / Pondi Mbai 25′

Anyouaze handed Colombe a deserved advantage but Ndongo Emma’s team couldn’t keep it as they conceded midway into the first segment via Pondy Mbai to succumb to sharing a point against Union Sportive they have never beaten in top-flight history. The result means Colombe of Dja remains winless since their 2-1 win against Canon Yaounde on December 31, 2022.

So far, Canon Yaounde, Stade Renard, Dynamo, Fortuna of Mfou and holders Cotonsport have had a bright start to the season.

The next round of matches will be played this weekend in grounds across the national territory.
