  • Lekie Filles FC will travel to Cameroon from DR Congo by road after their CAF Champions League tournament in Kinshasa
  • The players and staff arrived Yaoundé around midnight of Tuesday
  • They opted for road travel after they wrote to FECAFOOT and asked them to pay them part of the over 20 millions they are being owed to facilitate tickets purchase but the request was ignored

Players and staff of Lekie Filles FC of Yaoundé have reached Cameroon’s political capital after an almost three-day trip from DR Congo.

The team that left DR Congo on Sunday morning arrived Cameroon in the wee hours of this Wednesday after going through the borders of Congo Republic to enter Cameroon via the road.

Mogai Mogai, Michelle Moumazim and co had a rare experience because the club settled to travel for the tournament and return by road due lack of resources.

The strange travel option for a football team was adopted as a last resort after they failed to secure funding internally or convince the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) to pay their dues for winning the championship two years ago which could have facilitated travel by air for the entire team.

Despite the challenges to arrive DR Congo and back, the team led by coach Stephane Ndzana had an honourable performance in the competition. They finished second – behind eventual winners TP Mazembe Ladies that won the competition with seven points, two better than Lekie.

Lekie’s move to attend the tournament amidst the logistics challenges, plus their efforts to push TP Mazembe Ladies till the last kick of the game has won more fans for them.

Lekie’s efforts this year has been commendable. It was worst case scenario last season as Awa Filles failed to travel to nearby Equatorial Guinea for the same tournament due to lack funds.

Mazembe Ladies won the latest edition of the Union of Central African Football Federation (UNIFFAC) mini championship. They will fly the flag of the zone in the continental jamboree scheduled later this year in Egypt.
