Skipper Lautauro Martinez scored twice as Andre Onana’s Inter Milan came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 in the final of the Italian Cup this Wednesday at the Stadio Olympico in Rome.
The Cameroon international watched the game from the bench as coach Simeone Inzaghi opted to play veteran Samir Handonovic in goal in the final.
Despite helping the club reach the final of the competition, Handonovic was given the knot for likely the last time as he plans to leave Inter Milan this summer.
Gonzalez gave Fiorentina an early lead, but Lautauro responded with a brace within 12 minutes that turned the contest in favour of Inter.
Gonzalez’s early goal after three minutes was a wake up call for Inter as they scored the equalizer in the 29th minute through Lautauro and another eight minutes later to make it 2-1.
Though both sides had chances to add to the number of goals, it wasn’t to be. The game finished on the 2-1 score, amounting to a second trophy at Inter for Onana, who won the Super cup a few months after arriving last summer.
Onana and mates will immediately switch their attention towards preparations for the 2023 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City on June 10 in Istanbul.
