- Joel Embiid, the star center of the Philadelphia 76ers, had a night to remember on Monday, when he scored 70 points in a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs
Embiid became the ninth player in NBA history to reach the 70-point mark, and the first since Devin Booker in 2017. He also broke the franchise record of 68 points, set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1967 .
Embiid was unstoppable from the start, scoring 24 points in the first quarter alone. He finished the game with 24-for-41 shooting, including 6-for-10 from the three-point line and 16-for-18 from the free-throw line. He also added 15 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes and 49 seconds of action
Embiid’s performance was not only impressive, but also historic. He achieved the highest per-minute scoring average in NBA history, with 1.9 points per minute.
He surpassed the previous record of 1.87 points per minute, held by Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points in 48 minutes in 1962 . Embiid also joined Chamberlain as the only players to score 70 points and grab 15 rebounds in a game.
Reigning MVP and a sixth time all star, the Cameroon citizen has kept up his 30-point streak for 21 games in a row. His 76ers have also been on a winning streak of six games.
Speaking to a local TV broadcast, Embiid explained,
“I wouldn’t sit here and lie to you, but that’s my mindset every single game,My mindset is to attack, dominate offensively and defensively, so tonight was no different”
Nick Nurse, the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, praised Joel Embiid’s scoring ability after his 70-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs. Nurse said that Embiid could score in different ways, and that his size gave him an advantage near the basket and at the foul line. He also complimented Embiid’s shooting touch, which he considered a skill.
