Celebrated Zambian Referee Janny Sikazwe has retired from active refereeing after a glittering career.
The move comes less a month after Sikazwe took charge of the Canada versus Belgium game at the just-ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
43-year-old Sikazwe who also officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon earlier this year had announced he will retire after the World Cup.
Though he is yet to provide further comments about the decision, the Football Association Zambia, FAZ published a list of seven FIFA referees for 2023 without Sikazwe’s name, but we understand he will stay in the circle as an instructor to continue training younger officials.
Sikazwe became a FIFA referee in 2007 and featured at two FIFA World Cup tournaments plus multiple AFCON tournaments including taking charge of the 2017 AFCON final game Cameroon won against Egypt.
In a related development, South Africa’s Victor Gomez who was also at the World Cup has also announced he is retiring.
