Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivered a masterclass with all four goals for Gabon — and was sent off late — as the Panthers edged Gambia 4–3 in a pulsating seven-goal thriller that keeps their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive going into the final day.
In a topsy-turvy contest in Brikama, the lead changed hands multiple times, but it was Gabon who emerged victorious — inspired by their 36-year-old captain — to remain one point behind Group F leaders Côte d’Ivoire.
Aubameyang’s night, however, ended in frustration after he was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute, meaning he will miss Gabon’s final qualifier against Seychelles.
How the Drama Unfolded
Contrary to what the scoreline may suggest, Gabon were never in full control.
- Gabon took the lead early through Aubameyang (20′), but Gambia struck back just before half-time via Musa Barrow (45+2′), making it 1–1 at the break.
- The Scorpions came flying out in the second half — Alieu Fadera (47′) put them ahead, before Barrow grabbed his second in the 55th to make it 3–1.
- Gabon looked stunned — but their talisman wasn’t done. Aubameyang completed his hat-trick with goals in the 62nd and 78th minutes, levelling and then putting Gabon back in front for good.
- The drama didn’t stop there. With Gabon trying to see the game out, Aubameyang was sent off for a second bookable offence — but Gambia couldn’t capitalise.

“That was for Gabon. We keep believing. I’m gutted I can’t play the final game, but the team will finish it.”
Coach Thierry Mouyouma:
“Pierre carried us again — he’s one of Africa’s greats. We must now finish the job without him.”
