FIBA AFROCAN: Morocco succeeds DR Congo

A 78-76 win over Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday, July 16, earned Morocco gold, in the 2023 FIBA AFROCAN competition in Angola, Luanda.

The team who reached this stage, through the qualification round, after a semi failed group stage campaign, was able to improve their fourth place finish in 2019, Bamako, Mali.

Morocco fell short of three points in the first quarter registering a 22-25 loss.

Kevin Bruno Franceschi and teammates remobilized banking on their pace to play a fast-moving game, recording a 21-11 run to take the lead (43-36) at the end of the second quarter.

They later cemented their position after a 14-13 run until Côte d’Ivoire’s late minute win 27-21 in the fourth quarter.

With a two point advantage, The Atlas lions succeeds DR Congo, winners of the first edition.

Mohamed Choua was a great challenger to Zamba Camara. With 13 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks, the ASS Sale player was the court “maestro”

Moroccan guard and tournament MVP Kevin Franceschi chipped in 14 points, as Soufiane Kourdou and Abdelhakim Zouita contributed with 13 and 11 points each.
