Cote D’Ivoire opened the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau at the Stade Alassane Ouattara, Ebimpe.

The colourful opening ceremony saw the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe opening the tournament.

He performed the opening of the competition in the presence of FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.

The President of Cote D’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara was also present.

On the field of play, the Djurtus started the game moderately but were unable to get well at the final third.

It was the host that eventually broke the deadlock in the fourth minute when Seko Mohamed Fofana raced into the box before hitting a powerful effort into the back of the net.

Three minutes later, the travelers almost equalised but the Ivorian defence was strong enough to stop the threat.

A minute before the half-hour mark, Guinea Bissau missed another chance to level the scoreline as Mama Samba Balde’s attempt inside the box was weak and didn’t threaten Yahia Fofana in goal.

In the 35th minute, the goal scorer, Fofana almost doubled the lead but his effort from outside the box hit the bar.

The Elephants went into the dressing room with a slim lead.

After the interval, Jean Louis Gasset’s side doubled the lead through a superb strike inside the box in the 58th minute.

The host nation hold on for a win in the opening match of the tournament and moved top of Group A with three points ahead of Nigeria’s clash with Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
