DR Congo midfielder Dylan Batubinsika has expressed gratitude and dedicated his man of the match award to the rest of his teammates while revealing his most cherished moment of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to climax this Sunday after one month of intense competition in Côte D’Ivoire.
The 27-year-old former French youth international had a commanding performance at the heart of the DR Congo defense, partnering with Chancel Mbemba in the game that ended in a goalless draw before South Africa went on to beat Sebastian Desabre’s side by 6-5.
On the basis of his performance in his first start in the competition, the CAF Technical study group named hm the man of the match which provoked some very emotional words from the Saint Etienne man.
“I am pleased with this trophy and thank God for this. I think we can be proud of our tournament. Few observers doubted that we will make it to the semi-final,” Dylan Batubinsika began.
Quizzed on what made the went wrong on the day;
“They also lose against Nigeria. We are both here because we lost our last games. It was a difficult match for both of us. We had to be clinical to win the game but unfortunately couldn’t. We had to go back with the positives.
DR Congo could have won the game within 90 minutes but their wasteful finishing was their undoing on the night the Bafana Bafana could have scored within 90 minutes too.
“We were not clinical upfront. In the opponents box we couldn’t score. South Africa had hard times finishing the game maybe because they played two extra times.
“The happiest moment was the quarter-final game we won. I think the best moment was against Egypt. It was a tough game as we played through penalties. It was the highest feeling for me at this tournament,” He concluded.
DR Congo’s first podium finish in the tournament since 2017 provides a foundation for their French coach to build a team with which he would compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup when hostilities resume in June this year.
