Cameroonian forward Wanba Leonel Djuffo was among the scorers of two late goals as his Algerian club CR Belouizidad edged Zamalek by 2-0 on match day five of the 2022/23 CAF Champions League.
Zakaria Draoui scored the other goal as the White Knights were outclassed in the cold evening at the Stade 5 Juillet 1962. The Algerian champions did just enough to seal qualification for the Quarter-final from Group D, alongside Esperance of Tunis.
The tight contest which had few chances in the opening 45 minutes was decided in the final quarter hour as the Algerian explore rare moments of lack of concentration from their Egyptian visitors.
It looked like it was destined for a goalless game before a fine cross Akram Bouras met Draoui on the edge of the box. The Algerian international fired past Mohamed Sohbi to put the host ahead.
Wamba notched in the second just three minutes later pouncing on a perfect set-piece delivery to put the game to bed.
The fans pushed the hosts to preserve the advantage till the end.
The game ended on the 2-0 score for CR Belouizidad whose points tally stands at ten points, enough to reach the last eight at the expense of Zamalek who remained at the bottom of Group D with four points.
Wamba, winner of the 2019 U17 AFCON with Cameroon has scored two goals in five starts in the group stage of this season’s CAF Champions League.
