Cotonsport suffers Sixth consecutive defeat in 31 days

Cotonsport FC of Garoua, has now suffered a record six consecutive defeats for the first time in the history of the club.

The cotton Weavers were beaten 1-0 by Avion of Nkam on Saturday evening at the Bonamousadi stadium in Douala, in an advanced day 17 game of the Elite one championship.

A 66th minute screamer from Avion’s Jules Meyo, got Chadian shot stopper Gadin Allambatnan beaten, in a game were Avion was the better side for over an hour.

Che Malone Fondoh captained cotonsport from kick-off, before later handing the armband to Hassana Abbo, when the latter was introduced in the second segment. Goni Ali was another second half substitute for coach Gabriel Haman, as he struggled to contain Avion and had to sacrifice Baho Hennock from the center half’s.

Captain Rene Ndi lectured the game from the midfield for Avion, while Gaël Eroume kept Ibrahim Aba on his toes throughout.

Late pressure from cotonsport yielded no fruits, as Kaiba Djawal, Patient Wassou and Emmanuel Igboeri Ebubechoukwu, all failed to breakdown a resolute Avion defence.

Saturday’s defeat means cotonsport have now failed to record a single point in their last six games in all competitions, the first time in the history of the club.

Gabriel Haman’s side last won a game on February 05, when they defeated Renaissance of Ngoumou 1-0 at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium in Yaounde.

Since then, they have suffered defeats to Eding Sport and now Avion, in the Cameroon league, Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly and then back-to-back defeats to Al Hilal of Sudan, in the CAF Champions League, where they’re currently bottom of their group.

Saturday’s defeat means cotonsport is out of the top three in pool A of the Elite one championship, though having two games at hand.

Avion Academy of Nkam on their part are now temporarily out of the relegation zone, as they have 18 points (two points shy of Cotonsport), and are ranked above Djiko FC, PWD and Renaissance of Ngoumou.

It is a record low for the Cotonites, who are in a tough spell. The last time Cotonsport went more than six games without a win, was between 13 February 2022, to 10 April 2022, during which they five draws and six defeats (though not consecutive defeats.
