Still basking in glory after clinching the lone available slot in the CAF women’s champions league via the UNIFFAC zone, Huracanes’ coach Rondo Severino, has praised the Confederation of African football (CAF) for a smooth organization of the zonal playoffs.
Despite a late scare after Cameroon’s AS Awa Football Filles pulled out, citing lack of sufficient funds, the competition went through hitch free, and unperturbed.
“Thanks to CAF for the organization and our federation that accompanied us. It was our first time of participating in this competition. When debuting in such a competition, we try to leave blueprints.”
Women’s football is on the ascendancy and CAF is looking to bridge the gap between Men and Women’s football on the continent.
Coach Severino and his charges will be taking part in the final 8 for the first time. Past representatives from the region (Malabo Queens and TP Mazembe) did not excel, a narrative Huracanes wants to change.
“We will try to represent our country (Equatorial Guinea) in the best possible way, as well as our region,” coach Severino added, after his team’s 5-1 win on Thursday, September 14 – against Epah Ngamba.
Epah Ngamba’s coach Mavoungou Jean joined-in to applaud CAF for a wonderful competition that lasted for 6 days (September 8-14) in Equatorial Guinea’s capital of Malabo.
Whilst congratulating his young team for a great display of courage, coach Mevoungou opined that little details costed the Congolese;
“Congratulations to our opponents. We started each game well but dropped our guards. Huracanes have quick players and play direct football. We conceded at the 7th minute, and from then, we were left behind.
Epah Ngamba braved the odds to participate in the competition, despite injury depriving the team of several key players.
“I wish to encourage my players. We had just 12 players in our roster, so it wasn’t easy.
“We came in with four players injured. They couldn’t get a clearance from the medics.”
The Union of Central African Football Federations (UNIFFAC) keeps pulling the numbers in women’s club football. With latest cameos in the third edition of the CAF women’s Champions League playoffs, things are certainly bound to improve.
