Former African football legends have been invited to witness the 2022 African Nations Championship in Algeria, scheduled to run from January 13 to February 4 this year.
This was announced by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) announced on Monday, January 9.
Big names such as Ivory Coast legend, Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, Cameroons Roger Milla, Samuel Eto’o now President of Cameroon’s football Federation, Tunisia’s Karim Haggui.
Equally, Togolese star Emmanuel Adebayor, the legendary nigerian star Jay-Jay Okocha, Senegal’s Hadji Diouf, and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan will be at the event in the days ahead.
As it has been traditionally for a while now, several Former African football legends are honoured to grease CAF organized tournaments.
The 7th edition of the tournament to kickstart this Friday, will be staged in the presence of not only the president of the confederation of African football, Dr Patrice Motsepe but also President of the world football governing body(FIFA) Gianni Infantino.
18 nations from across the continent will be vying for the title in Algeria, this edition which has seen an increase of two more nations from the former 16-team tournament in the last edition.
The participants have been paired into five groups of four and three and the games will be staged in four reserved stadia in the host nation; Nelson Mandela stadium in Algers, Miloud-Hadefi in Oran, Chahid-Hamlaoui in Constantine and the May 19, 1956 stadium in Annaba.
Participants of the CHAN 2022 are; Algeria(host) Libya, Ethiopia and Mozambique( Group A)
DR Congo, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal.(Grp B)
Morocco, Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana.(Group C)
Mali, Angola and Mauritania (Grp D)
Cameroon, Niger and Congo Brazzaville (Grp E)
The opening game will see host nation, Algeria and Libya in action at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Algeria’s capital city.
