Two players from the Cameroon U17 women’s volleyball team have denied allegations of pregnancy involving a member of the Cameroon Volleyball Federation.

Marie Julia Beyala and Sandra Kenfack, both members of the youth volleyball team who participated in the World Cup and the championship in Abuja, stated in an interview with Equinox TV that they are not pregnant and have never received any inappropriate advances from staff members.

Marie Julia Beyala clarified:

“Nothing happened. I am not pregnant. When we returned from the World Cup in Hungary , I played in the championship in Nigeria. Up until now, I am not pregnant.”

Sandra Kenfack added:

“No coach has ever asked me to follow him to a room or told me that I need to have a relationship with him to be selected.”

Their parents, who were present during the interview, supported their statements. For weeks, the media has been flooded with news of five underage girls from the national volleyball team allegedly impregnated by a member of the volleyball federation, with no names given for the alleged perpetrators or victims.

Luc Marcel Ntamack, assistant coach of the U19 team, commented on the matter:

“No player has experienced sexual harassment. To say that you need to have a sexual relationship to play or travel is false. It’s a professional relationship between coach and player.”

Joseph Sanama, coach of the U17 team, demanded proof of these accusations:

“Those claiming there was sexual harassment should provide proof, and we will see if what they are saying is true.”

Some media outlets, like Cam Volleyball, have released testimonies from victims, some of whom are in the national team. A testimony posted on Sunday, July 21, accuses Peter Nonnenbroich, coach of the senior women’s national volleyball team, of exchanging a place in the team for sexual favors. Another testimony claims there is high sexual promiscuity in the national team, with sex being exchanged for a national team call-up.

All these allegations remain unproven. The Cameroon Volleyball Federation has launched an investigation into the matter since July 4, 2024, with an independent Ad Hoc commission. Victims have until July 30 to file their complaints.

While the issue is far from resolved, the acting president of the volleyball federation, Bello Bourdanne, has condemned such actions, emphasizing that they contradict the values of sports:

“The image of the federation has been shattered, the image of Cameroon has been shattered. These acts go against the values of sports. All these cases must be thoroughly investigated by the commission.”

The truth of these accusations remains uncertain, but the public demands a fair and just resolution. Sexual harassment in sports is a significant issue in Cameroon, with many victims not receiving the justice they deserve.

The most severe action taken by federations against perpetrators has been expulsion, with no therapy or compensation for the victims. The volleyball federation is urged to conduct a thorough investigation and appropriately punish the perpetrators if these accusations are proven true.

Meanwhile, media platforms that reported this news without proof will face legal action at the Yaoundé Court of First Instance.
