Top-flight championship Referees in Cameroon have been called upon to boycott the final round of regular championship matches planned for this weekend on grounds across the country.
Ngoon Mbeleck Simon, a retired Referee and president of the Littoral Referee association made the call this Wednesday, February 28, as part of protest against the non-payment of nine match days of games officiated in this season’s championship.
According to the celebrated match official in his hail days, FECAFOOT has abandoned Referees due to undisclosed reasons.
“This is nine match days you guys have not received your dues – a situation that exposes you to club presidents.
“The Federation has abandoned us due to undisclosed reasons,” Mr Mbeleck wrote in anger.
It is not the first time match officials are grumbling about non payment of their dues by the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT), thus the Littoral branch president and mates have decided to match threats of boycott to action.
“I know many active Referees can’t express this worry, but be rest assured that your association and myself as president says no to this. On this note I ask you all not to go for matches counting for the last match day this weekend unless your full dues are paid. Enough is enough…Rise up as one person,” he concluded.
Per our findings, Elite One referees receive a match bonus of 30.000FCFA per match. In cases where the referee is a FIFA referee, there’s an extra 5.000FCFA added to their match bonus.
In Cameroon, Referees are paid a transportation allowance which is obtained by calculating the distance they have to cover as well as lodging and feeding stipends.
On average, an elite One referee receives approximately 81.000FCFA per match (86.000FCFA for a FIFA referee) for match bonus, transportation, lodging and feeding.
Referees owed this amount per match for this long are exposed to other ills which may end up having a negative impact on their general conduct.
It remains to be seen if the men in black will yield to the call from president Ngoon Mbeleck Simon.
Cameroon’s top-flight championship climax this weekend with day 18 matches while the playoffs phase is scheduled for next month.
